Food Allergies
Our two year old WPG (Berkano) recently had a bout of bloody diarrhea and was diagnosed with colitis (according to our vet possibly attributable to a food allergy). She has always had moderately loose stools and over her two years, we have tried several types/brands of food. She has been best able to tolerate Science Diet Sensitive Stomach, although her stools still weren't what I would call "kickably firm" (that's not a technical term).

Our vet recommended and we just started a two month trial of Hills Prescription (venison and potato), so we're committed to the current plan for a while unless the diarrhea returns, but I thought I'd ask what others have found to be helpful with their Griffs.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Food Allergies
A little canned pumpkin helps with mild diarrhea, but I doubt that it should be feed on a daily basis.  I know that changing brands frequently can make it worse.  But then, I'm a social worker not a veterinarian, so I know more about verbal b.s. than real poop.

Re: Food Allergies

My 10 year old Griffon (Brandy) was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease nine years ago. Her symptoms were much like you describe and very frequent. It is a disease that can flare up and cause loss of bowl control and severe diarrhea for several days. Since that diagnosis she has been on a strict diet of Purina Veterinary Diet food called EN Gastroenteric. It can only be bought though you’re Veterinarian which of course puts it in the “not cheap” category.

Shortly after we put her on this diet there was an amazing change. There has been an occasionally flare up over these past years, but it has been minimal and usually only lasts a day or less now. Her stools are normally very hard and she goes regularly on a daily basis. We do not feed her anything other than the EN and Milk Bone Biscuits as an occasional treat. My Veterinarian is very cautious about her having any other food and is not a fan of any rawhide or other chewable items other than a "Made in the USA" rawhide bone on rare occasions.

I can't say for certain this will alleviate your issues, but can only say how it has enabled Brandy to live a good "controlled" life these past nine years. She self feeds and also seems to know when a "flare up" is coming and stops eating and lets us know it's time to be >Jim Montgomery
